Piston Dynamics

The Piston Dynamics page determines piston velocity, piston acceleration, and piston force at a specific engine speed based on these inputs:

Stroke length

Rod length

Engine speed

Piston weight

Step size

Although the piston speed of an engine can be calculated for various engine speeds, you must know the maximum piston speed to calculate the maximum RPM of the engine. These very general guidelines may be helpful:

Cast iron crank and/or rods — 3500 feet per minute, 58 feet per second

Forged crank, heavy duty rods — 4000 feet per minute, 67 feet per second

Full race, moderate durability — 5000 feet per minute, 83 feet per second

Full drag race — 6000 feet per minute, 100 feet per second
