You must know the maximum piston speed to calculate the maximum RPM, and you must know the maximum RPM to calculate the maximum piston speed. These approximate guidelines can be used for maximum piston speed:
Stock, modern engines - 3250 to 3500 feet per minute
With forged crank and rods - 3750 to 4000 feet per minute
Racing engines - 4000 to 5000 feet per minute
Serious drag racing engines - 5000 to 6000 feet per minute
